MERA PEAK CLIMBING

Mera Peak (6,476m) is the highest trekking peak in Nepal and one of the most rewarding climbing adventures in the Himalayas. Located within the pristine Hinku Valley of the Everest region, Mera Peak offers an excellent opportunity for climbers to experience a Himalayan summit above 6,000 meters while enjoying breathtaking mountain scenery and a true wilderness trekking experience.

Despite its impressive elevation, Mera Peak is considered a non-technical climbing peak, making it an ideal choice for trekkers and aspiring mountaineers seeking their first high-altitude Himalayan ascent. The climb requires good physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and basic mountaineering skills, but does not involve advanced technical climbing.

Mera Peak lies within the protected area of the Makalu-Barun National Park, one of Nepal’s most diverse and unspoiled mountain regions. The peak is named after the legendary sacred Mount Meru, which holds great significance in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The route passes through remote valleys, dense rhododendron and pine forests, alpine meadows, and traditional Sherpa settlements, providing an authentic Himalayan experience away from the crowded trekking trails.

One of the greatest rewards of climbing Mera Peak is the spectacular summit panorama. From the top, climbers can enjoy views of five of the world’s highest mountains: Everest (8,848.86m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m). Few peaks in Nepal offer such an extraordinary Himalayan viewpoint.

The first ascent of Mera Peak was made in 1953 by Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing. The mountain has three distinct summits: Mera South (6,065m), Mera Central (6,461m), and Mera North (6,476m), with Mera North being the highest and most frequently climbed summit.

The journey typically begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by a trek through the beautiful and remote Hinku Valley. The trail passes through charming villages, lush forests, and high alpine landscapes before reaching Khare, the last settlement before the climb. From there, climbers continue to Mera La and High Camp before making their summit attempt.
