Overview

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a remote and adventurous journey in eastern Nepal, starting from Tumlingtar in the Sankhuwasabha district. The trail passes through traditional villages such as Khandbari, Chichila, Num, Tashigaon, and others before reaching Makalu Base Camp.

Located inside Makalu Barun National Park at an altitude of around 5,250 meters, the trek offers spectacular views of Mt. Makalu (8,481 m), Mt. Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse, Baruntse, Chamlang, and many other Himalayan peaks. It also features glaciers, alpine lakes, and rich biodiversity.

Culture and Experience

The region is home to diverse ethnic communities including Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, Gurung, Tamang, Magar, and others. Trekkers experience authentic village life, traditional culture, and warm local hospitality in a remote Himalayan setting.

Trek Difficulty

Makalu Base Camp is a challenging and high-altitude trek, usually lasting over 20 days. It requires good fitness and proper acclimatization due to elevations above 5,000 meters. However, with proper guidance, it is achievable for determined trekkers.

Permits

This is a restricted area trek and requires special permits, including the Makalu Barun National Park entry permit and local rural municipality permit.
