Overview

Rising to an elevation of 6,440 meters (21,129 feet), Cholatse Peak is one of the most challenging and spectacular climbing objectives in Nepal's Khumbu region. Located between the Gokyo Valley and the Everest region, Cholatse is renowned for its striking pyramid-shaped summit, steep faces, and technical climbing routes.

Also known as Jobo Lhaptshan, Cholatse stands above the turquoise waters of Chola Tsho Lake and offers breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Tawache. The mountain is a favorite among experienced alpinists seeking a technical Himalayan expedition away from the crowds.

The journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, followed by a trek through traditional Sherpa villages, including Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo. The expedition then crosses the challenging Cho La Pass before reaching Cholatse Base Camp.

The standard route follows the southwest ridge and involves mixed climbing on snow, ice, and rock terrain. Climbers encounter steep sections, exposed ridges, and technical pitches that require proficiency in alpine climbing techniques and previous experience with high-altitude mountaineering.

Cholatse is considered a demanding expedition best suited to climbers with prior experience on technical peaks above 6,000 meters. Successful climbers are rewarded with exceptional panoramic views and a true alpine climbing experience in the heart of the Himalayas.
