Mountaineer, Tourism Entrepreneur & Conservation Advocate
Born in 1968 in Tapting–1, Chyangba, Solukhumbu, Nepal, Wongchu Sherpa is a renowned mountaineer, tourism entrepreneur, social leader, and environmental advocate with more than four decades of experience in Nepal's Himalayan tourism industry.
After completing professional training as a trekking guide and mountaineering guide, he began his career working as a cook, trekking guide, and climbing guide in the Everest region. His passion for the mountains and commitment to local communities inspired him to establish Peak Promotion, a leading adventure tourism company dedicated to responsible and sustainable Himalayan experiences.
Wongchu Sherpa has devoted his life to advancing tourism infrastructure, environmental conservation, healthcare, education, and community development throughout the Everest region. He has founded and supported numerous organizations and initiatives focused on improving the lives of mountain communities while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the Himalayas.
As an accomplished mountaineer, he has successfully climbed some of the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Makalu, Shishapangma, Cho Oyu, and Kilimanjaro. He is recognized for his extraordinary achievement of spending 18 nights at an altitude of 7,000 meters on Mount Everest and sleeping for one hour on the summit of the world's highest mountain.
His extensive experience includes leadership roles in major expeditions, international film productions, climate change initiatives, rescue organizations, tourism policy development, and high-altitude environmental campaigns. His work has earned him numerous national and international honors, including the prestigious Suprabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu awarded by the Government of Nepal and the Everest Social Service Award.
Today, through Peak Promotion, Wongchu Sherpa continues to promote safe, authentic, and sustainable adventure travel while inspiring future generations to protect the Himalayas.
