September 23 – 25  Fly to Kathmandu through Hong Kong

A quick flight to Vancouver followed by the 13 hour marathon to Hong Kong.  Luckily I had three seats to myself so I could catch a few winks.  And thank gawd for the Marriott Sky City hotel in the Hong Kong airport where I crashed for 10 hours.  After their monstrous buffet breakfast I took a shuttle to the town of Tung Chung for a ride up the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to see the Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery.  The "Big Buddha" sits high on a hill on Lantau Island and I'm glad I abandoned my plan to hike up there given the scorching heat.  It's thankfully cooler there among the cedars but soon it's time for my afternoon flight to Kathmandu.  I had a nice dinner at the airport complete with a glass of Spanish Sauve Blanc, knowing that it will be the last wine for a month (yikes!).  The flight is only four hours but it drags as we make a scheduled stop in Bangladesh for over an hour.  My bag is about the last to come onto the carousel but I'm met outside the airport by a smiling driver with a marigold garland.  And upon arrival at the hotel, the lobby is graced with an embarrassingly large sign reading "Hearty Welcome Jamie McVicar Round Annapurna Trek".  I have no small bills for the security guard who brings up my bag so give him a 500 rupee tip.  For the rest of my stay he salutes me when I pass.
