March 25, 2015 - Manang - Rest Day

What a day!  This was our Rest Day, a day to poke around and rest the muscles while acclimatizing to life about 13,000 feet. We need this if we are going to make it over Thorong La, a pass at 17,500 (5,416 meters, approx). We started the day by sleeping in - what a treat!  We followed this up by grabbing a cappuccino at one of Manang's many (4?)  coffee shops, and then did some shopping at the tables that local Tibetans and Nepalese Buddhists set up along the main path through town. Yes, we managed to find some treasures, however, we had to keep in mind that we need to carry everything up nearly 5000 feet and then back down before we see another car, motorcycle or any motorized thing.  Actually, it was so nice to spend a day far removed from anything motorized, and almost no computer related activity (there are few WiFi zones up here).   Despite the world-class scenery, we took very few photos. Instead, we attended a workshop put on by the Nepal Mountaineering Society on the prevention of, symptoms of and treatment of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), including High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (swelling of the lungs, or HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema(swelling of the brain, or HACE).  We are both feeling excellent and feel that we will acclimatize well as we climb higher.  The next three days will be the proof of this...
