Up bright and early to meet at 0445am, excited to begin our journey to Everest Base Camp. A quick breakfast and we were off to the airport. After a slight delay and a cultural talk on Sherpas, up up and away we went to Lukla (2850metres). After landing on what looked like the smallest airstrip in the world(!), we walked through the village to the Khumbu resort for another breakfast.
We set off on our 8km scenic trek for the day, some amazing scenery en route! We passed everything from chickens, cows, flowers, zopikyo (cow+yak), prayer flags, the oldest tree in the Khumbu valley and of course lots of cute dogs. We also crossed the first of what's sure to be many tall shaky bridges! After a lovely lunch and hot mango juice at Sherpas View Point restaurant, we made our way to our final destination, the Sunrise Lodge at 2610metres. We had an interesting lecture on Acute Mountain Sickness followed by dinner. Finally, we had a talk from Ang Phula on tomorrow's plan and the danger of dogs – French ones in particular! Great first day trekking the Himalayas!
