First day of Trekking

With high anxiety and more than a little frustration we embarked on our fourth trip to Kathmandu domestic airport. This time we actually made it through the security door…err…curtain and onto the tarmac for departure!!!!! Off to the land of 24,000+ ft peaks. First day of trekking has been incredible! Flying into Lukla (9,250 ft) got the heart racing, with a runway of only approx 300 yards dead ending in a solid stone wall - there was no margin for error. Luckily the pilots applied the brakes on time!

Lukla Airport

Once on the trail, we were overwhelmed by spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks and beautiful green valleys, greatly exceeding our expectations (watch out for the yak dung!). We were amazed by the strength and stamina of our porter as he carried our 75 pounds of crap with ease. Carisa did contribute by removing approximately 1 pound from her bag the night before or it would have been a staggering 76 pounds which may have been over the top….

With the sun at our backs and the expert supervision of Tendi Sherpa, we made our way to Phakding (8,695 ft) to spend the night at our first teahouse in the Solukhumbu!
