3 October, 2009 : Climbing up the hill from Namche
Sanjay Saxena: Woke up to cloudy skies and incessant rain. It was our day to depart Namche for Kumjung and the thought of walking in the rain was not appealing. Our day’s destination Kumjung was just a short 3 hr hike away, so off we went. Climbing up the hill from Namche, the rain slowed and by the time we reached Syangboche it had pretty much stopped. Though the peaks eluded us, the overcast sky made for great photography. The high meadows leading from Syangboche to the Everest View Lodge were full of wild flowers. The trail traversing the Syangboche hill (covered with euphorbia, asters, edelweiss to name some of the flowers) had precipitous drop off into the abyss. This was one trail we were thank full for not hearing any bells (for more on bells read Chandra’s account from Oct 2). The descent into Kumjung through a rhododendron forest with star moss covered boulders contrasting the fall colors were a treat.
