Pemba, Kame and I summited Mount Everest on May 19, 2009 at 8:10 AM!
May 19, 2009 Part 2 – South Col – C2
After we managed to get by our 1 hour backup at the Hillary Step and a few slow climbers at the South Summit, we made good time back to the South Col. We were feeling pretty good and made the decision to pack up camp and go to C2 to spend the night. With a short rest and with large loads we were on our way by 4 PM, which was a little later than we wanted to leave. I ran out of oxygen about half way down to C3 and had to do without. By the time we packed up C3 and started down the Lhotse Face to C2 it was after 7 PM with darkness approaching quickly. I went ahead of Pemba and Kame and managed to get half way to C2 before I was shrouded in complete darkness. I kept thinking that this feels a lot like Adventure Racing, but at 24,000 feet. An hour later, Pemba and Kame who had stayed behind to sweet up C3 and finish packing joined me at the bottom of the face with extremely large packs, maybe 60 kilos each, and dragging duffel between them. Once I saw that my overflowing mini backpack with two oxygen tanks and too much gear didn’t warrant anymore self pity from me or anyone else.
We made it to C2 at about 10 PM exhausted and tired. When Kame tried to wake me up to give me water and food, I flatly refused and went back to sleep.
