14 April 2008: This morning Terri, Chet and I hiked to a peak near Kalapatthar...
This morning Terri, Chet and I hiked to a peak near Kalapatthar. We left around 8:30 AM after breakfast and reached the summit around 11 AM. From the elevation near 18,500 feet we had excellent views of Everest all the way down to the South Col. We took pictures and ate lunch before hiking back to base camp.
When we got back to base camp we were told that there was a meeting scheduled for all expedition leaders at 2 PM. A military Liaison officer had camp up to base camp to let all climbers know what was going to be allowed at base camp and above. There were few answers at this point except that additional military officers would arrive later today and tomorrow.
The fixed line to camp one is still not finished, so we can only climb about three quarters of the way to camp one. We decided to have a rest day tomorrow on the 15th. Terri, Kristin Peterson (HMA – EMT) and Mike Tayloe (HMA – EMT) will be leaving on the 15th and there is another meeting scheduled with all expeditions. We should find out what will be allowed at that meeting since most of the military officials are in camp by this evening.
