7 April 2008: Many expedition groups are already here at Base Camp...
Today is bright and beautiful – deep blue skies and brilliant White Mountain peaks soar in every direction. It is about a two hour hike to base camp which is nestled at the base of the Khumbu icefall. The hike up from Gorak Shep passed up and down through the glacier moraine. After about two hours we arrived at the base camp.
Many expedition groups are already here, but have spread out in the area pretty well. Yellow, red, green and blue tents form a colorful village on the gray glacial moraine.
On the way in we could see the summit of Everest, but it isn’t visible from the base camp.
Our advance Sherpa and porters and cooks arrived about a week before us and set up a cooking area, huge dinning tent, sleeping tents, shower and bathroom tents. So all we had to do was move in and sit down for lunch. We also have solar power here to run computers and charge electronic devices. This will be the climber’s home until they establish and move up to higher camps on the mountain. Much of the time here will be spent at base camp.
