2nd April , 2012 - An acclimatization hike to above 5000 m

Awake and breakfast at 7 am; falling into a nice routine. Everyone’s spirits and appetites are vigorous as we prepare for an acclimatization hike to above 5000 m. This is higher than any point in the lower 48 States.

The climb was steep but the views were rewarding. As we ascend, we see the route to the North that we will later take to Everest Base Camp.  Lots of celebratory photos at the top and those that have altimeters compare for accuracy, our climb is to 5100 m.

Back at the lodge it is sunny and a rare treat is sipping hot lemon tea in the sun. We all sit around in plastic chairs and for a moment, our scene might be compared to a Club Med Resort…

After an amazing lunch that was bountiful and flavorful, we had the afternoon off. Some have laundry done, some wash their clothes in the shower. Aaaahhhh, the SHOWER: a luke warm wonderfulness that is limited to 20 liters and so must be savored. Those who didn’t have the privilege of a hot shower, used the hand towel we were given at dinner as a luxurious “mountain shower”.

Tomorrow we trek to Chukhung on our way to Island Peak. Further updates will be posted after our Island Peak adventure since internet access will be scarce.
