Heading towards Khunde Peak

31st March , 2012 - Trek from Khumjung to Tengboche

After a beautiful restful night at Khumjung (3,790 meters or12,431 feet) and a huge sumptuous breakfast of eggs, pancakes, porridge and caffeinated beverages to say the least (J), we paid a visit to the local Khumjung Gumpa monastery famous for its display of a Yeti scull cap. We then trekked down to the confluence of the refreshing waters of the Dudhkhosi and Bhotekhosi rivers. We stopped for a light lunch including rara noodle soup, dhal bhat and hot mango drinks at the Paradise lodge in Deboche. After crossing the suspension bridge over the rushing and refreshing white waters, we hiked up a steep rocky trail into Tengboche at 3,850 meters or 12,628 feet. Tengboche is famous for its spectacular monastery as well as its bakery. We checked into the Himalayan view lodge and after a tea break and pulse oximeter check ranging from 93 to 98% saturation, we hiked up a steep trail behind our lodge to 4,190 meters or 13, 743 feet in freezing rain and sleet to help continue with our altitude acclimatization.

We later visited the monastery, took lots of pictures including that of the famous Tengboche bakery and the majestic AmaDablam, Thamserku and Kangtegamountains and returned to the lodge for tea and snacks consisting of french fries and pop corn and several rounds of playing card games including Hearts. We topped off this amazing day with another huge sumptuous feast of dhal bhat, steak, French fries, Sherpa stew, veggie momos, mars pie, rice pudding, apple pie and fresh apples. One of the highlights of our dining experience was the stimulating company of David Breashears and his team.
