November 9, 2012 - A quite soft day, with an acclimatization hike to 4600 m

Our second day in Periche.  A quite soft day, with an acclimatization hike to 4600 m before lunch. We had a fifteen minutes meditation on the mountain over viewing peaks like Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Island Peak and Baruntse. The sun was shining, listening to the sound of the river and the wind touching our face. What a wonderful moment! We went down to have our lunch at the lodge and afterwards we all had a lazy moment in the sun. Some of us fell asleep and woke up with quite intense sunburn. The sun is really strong up here.

In the afternoon we had a really interesting lecture by a doctor from Himalayan Rescue Association. He told us about mountain altitude sickness and other hazards in the Himalaya. Walking slowly, climb high – sleep low, etc, how to recognize symptoms on altitude sickness was some of the things he told us. We also got the opportunity to check our level of oxygen in the blood. Some in the group has shown symptoms of altitude sickness and had a low level of oxygen saturation in the blood. They were recommended to start an immediate treatment with Diamox to get rid of the symptoms which has been headache, lack of appetite, difficulty to sleep and nausea. They’re already feeling better. Now we’re sitting warm and cozy in the lodge drinking tea. It might be good to know that we are out of mobile service for a couple of days. But we are all safe and sound and having a good time!
