11th April , 2012 - Last Day in Base Camp

Today was unfortunately our last day in base camp. Although our last, we made the most of it. The day started off with a tour around base camp and wonderful views of the ice fall. Prior to our base camp outing, the summit team had geared up and headed to practice ice climbing. During our morning we were able to catch a glimpse of their practice. After our jaunt around camp, we visited the Rivers of Ice: Vanishing Glaciers of the Greater Himalaya, a photo exhibit by David Brashears about the receding glaciers. It was a fascinating look at the glaciers early in the 20th century as compared to now. Just next door to the exhibit was the Everest ER tent where we were given a tour of the clinic facilities by Luanne and Ashish, another physician working at the clinic.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in lecture, learning about lightening injuries, avalanche prevention/technology and further overviews of AMS. We also had a lecture by Luanne about various cases she’s seen in her experience. We also continued to enjoy the amazing cooking of our camp staff. I don’t think any of us have experienced any decrease in appetite.
