6th April , 2012 - Tengboche to Pheriche

Today we woke up to a winter wonderland outside our hotel. It had apparently snowed overnight and everything was a complete whiteout. We unfortunately didn’t have the spectacular mountain views we were hoping for, but the snow was beautiful in itself. As we headed toward Pangboche we wandered through a rhodendron forest, which shed piles of snow on us as the sun melted the snow off the trees. There were hundreds of trekkers, yaks, and porters on the trail today, and at many points we encountered traffic jams at choke points. While we were on the trail we saw a family of Nepali mountain goats perched on a ledge almost posing for the numerous pictures we took.

We passed through Pangboche, and then stopped in Shomore for lunch (at 4010 meters). As we were waiting for our meal, we saw a helicopter run right through the valley. We figured it must have been a rescue mission since the clouds would have made a sightseeing flight unexciting.

After lunch we climbed up Pheriche pass, at 4270 meters, and then descended slightly into Pheriche at 4240 meters. We arrived just in time for the Himalayan Rescue Association’s daily lecture on health issues in the mountains. We met up with one of the HRA doctors, who will be coming with us up to base camp, and back down to Namche. She told us that apparently the helicopter from earlier today was for the cook from our lodge who had fallen off the roof, scraping the snow off (the roofs aren’t built for heavy snow), and fractured his humerus. He was airlifted back to Kathmandu.

For our afternoon lecture, we talked about fractures and dislocations, and learned the many uses of the SAM splint. Very appropriate given their patient today.

Tomorrow is our rest day, but some of us are planning a short hike and some more activities with the HRA clinic here.
