Return from Everest Base Camp

From Brian Auerbach

Today we awoke to a white Xmas morning in May. It had snowed heavily the night before and turned all the brown rocks on the glaciers to white. Unfortunately, our Gu-Gu girl (Brenda) was sick that night. So we waited to leave Base Camp until she was well enough to walk. While we waited, we heard over the radio that Appa Sherpa was only an hour away from his 16 th Everest summit, and that there were two Korean climbers stuck on the mountain for almost 30 hrs and were now in trouble. We started our trek back to Pheriche at 10:00, but the going was slow, as we had to make sure that Brenda was coming along ok. At one point on the trip down, we walked past a steep, rocky inclines and had to watch out as rocks kept coming loose from the top and
hurdling down at us. After the rocks, the trek down was uneventful, because the clouds came on and obstructed our view. We did get a great view of Amadablam as we past the rock memorials to the dead climbers. We arrived in Pheriche as it was getting darker, but it was very surreal coming into the town as everything was surrounded by clouds. Tomorrow we continue to Namche Bazar and the next day to Lukla!!
