18th April, 2012 - Everest Base Camp to Pheriche

We were up early at chilly Mt Everest Base Camp. There were beautiful views in all directions as we emerged from our “frosted” tents in frigid temperatures.  The mood in our camp was somber while we packed and ate another great meal, as we were losing three of our team due to medical issues.  Dale was seen by the founding doctor of the Everest Base Camp Medical Facility and diagnosed with a vascular disorder to his leg which had been hindering him for the past four days.  In typical “Dale fashion” he endured his pain and discomfort to be able to complete his goal of reaching Base Camp. Dale, his caring bride Nannette and close friend Glenda, were flown from a small glacier based helipad in Base Camp to Kathmandu to seek medical evaluation and possible early departure for the states.

The remaining four of us started our journey “home,” our excellent guide and Sherpa ratio was now 1:1!!  We said our goodbyes to newly created friends at Base Camp Hospital and Peak Promotion camp staff, in addition to our experienced friends, Dick and Terry Morse.  Then we started our trek off the glacier, back tracking our steps from days before. The trekking was much easier as we had gained some acclimatization and we were now losing elevation. The villages seemed to pass quicker in this direction than battling the elevation in the opposite. Lunch was at Gorakshep where we had stayed two days prior. Following this refueling we steadily lost elevation and put kilometers behind us rapidly.  We passed through Lobuche, Thukla and arrived in Pheriche at 4:30 in the afternoon. The weather steadily deteriorated as the wind picked up and the temperature seemed to drop.  Interestingly on the last leg of our trek today, we met up with one of the owners of Peak Promotion, Wongchu Sherpa, who was guiding a group of physicians (WMS) on the path from which we had just come.
In Pheriche, we are staying at a new Tea House that is one of the nicest we have been in thus far.  A hot shower in the hall and a well heated dining area!  Tomorrow we head to Namche.
