First and foremost, since we’ve been away from our family and friends for over two weeks, I want to let all of our blog followers know that all seven of us miss you terribly!! Homesickness is setting in, some worse than others.
We started the day off with our routine wake up tea, packing our belongings, and breakfast this morning in Lobuche. Then we set off trekking to Gorak Shep. It was a beautiful sunny morning! It was also warm-ish considering we started at 16,175 feet elevation. Our destination, Gorak Shep is 16,864 feet. So the trek wasn’t too vertical, a gentle grade, but it still took us 3 ½ hours. Along the way, we had awesome views of Nupste, Pumori and Everest Base camp. We got to Gorak Shep and had tea and a light lunch before we started stage 2 of our day. We took a hike to Kala Patthar at 18,315 feet elevation for a great view of Mount Everest. Everest base camp (tomorrow’s destination) does not have a good view because Mount Nupste blocks the view of Everest. It was quite a “vicious” climb up to the top of Kala Patthar!!! It was another 3 ½ hour trek and a 1,328 foot climb. The climb was indeed worth it….an awesome view of Everest!! So good that “Christmas” pictures were taken with Santa hats used for this year’s Christmas cards. While trekking up Kala Pattar we heard many avalanches over toward Everest. We were told that since it was a sunny day that was the cause. We then came “home” to our tea house for a nice dinner and wi-fi sessions.
P.S. “I’m not hearty, I’m pink!” That was our quote of the day by guess who.
