12th April, 2012 - Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp

We awoke to another yummy breakfast in preparation for training using our harnesses, ascenders and descenders.  We trekked to a steep hillside above Chhukung where our guides set up a number of challenges in order to prepare us for the summit of Island Peak.  We ascended on the rope one at a time 200 ft up, then descending back down, learning to use the equipment efficiently with safeties used in the case of equipment failure.  In other words, our trek was now becoming more vicious than delicious!  We then trekked from approximately 15,400 ft at Chhukung to Island Peak base camp at 16,500 ft where the snow was blowing in the ice cold temperature, and we slept in tents.  We were ready for the 1am wake up call to leave for the summit of Island Peak.  Thus far, most of the stomach issues are in check with Imodium, there are many running noses, but the fatigue with decreased oxygen is indescribable, making even getting dressed an effort leaving you breathless.  Yet…the experience of living among these gentle yet hardy Nepalese people, and the views of their land leave you even more breathless.  The lack of showering and frigid temperatures both in and out of your hut make for a lifestyle that’s far from comfortable, but it sure is delicious in the Himalayas.
