19th April , 2012 - Rest Day in Kathmandu

Met up with Rupa and went to the Everest hard ware store. Locally produced mountain gear, handmade and at wholesale prices. Can’t get any better than that. The guy who cut the fabrics was working without protective equipment in the form of steel gloves, but it was nice to see that everything is made on site.  We stopped by the Peak Promotion office and had a drink.

After that, we went to the former royal palace now converted to a museum. The former palaces were destroyed in a Earthquake in 1934 and demolished after the royal massacre in 2001 (Google the event, and you will read about a disputed incident in the Nepalese history that in part marked the end of the royal dynasty). The current palace which we visited is a 59 room building built in the sixties. The palace was somewhat bizarre with expensive, but also odd and often tacky furnishing. Guess that all modern dictators (which a powerful king is), share the same esthetic to some extent, lion skins and kitsch were in abundance). Fanny ate something bad during the afternoon, and is now grounded for the night with some kind of food poison.
