8th April , 2012 - Namche to Tengboche

Today we went from Namche to Tengboche, first down and then steep up, a total climb of 600 meters.  The landscape is still dominated by pine forests, but will become more sparsely vegetated from Tengboche and on.  We had a really beautiful morning with sun and really nice views of both Ama Dablam (the Matterhorn like peak to the right) and Everest. Diki pointed out the route that most teams follow when summiting Ama Dablam, which is very dangerous due to sharp ridges, avalanche danger and often strong winds. “Only” 6800 m high, but even so a more dangerous climb than Everest.

Along the trek we bumped into a climbing expedition from the Indian Army.  They will put ten female army officers on the top of Everest.  We had a brief talk with the girls and gave them our best wishes. Up at the Everest base camp we will visit their camp (funny thing, they were accompanied by a film team from Discovery channel, and we took a shot with the Indians and us when we were crossing   a bridge).

Tengboche is an important religious site, which is one of the highest located Buddhist monasteries in the world.  Nice place could have been the setting for the Eddie Murphy Golden child movie. Which it isn’t.
Unfortunately Erik had some problems with his stomach, but he feels much better now.
