11th May, 2013 - Trek to Namche Bazaar

Got up at 5:30 when our Sherpa leader Phula knocked on the door for bed tea in Phakding. Felt a mild headache soon as I got up. Don’t know the cause but it might be due to shortage of oxygen in the room and inside our sleeping bags. Did not feel like waking up as we had had only about 4 hours of sleep the night before. Looked out of the window and Wowww! I was blown away with the view. A huge mountain with only its tip lighted with orange light from the sunrise on opposite side. Not one to miss an opportunity to capture awesome photos, I set up my camera to capture a time lapse clip of the sunrise showing on the mountain & finished the brief morning ablutions and breakfast within an hour as the camera clicked away happily.

Left our lodge at 7am. The morning scenes we witnessed were really amazing.  I have explored the world and been to all seven continents. This is my first trekking trip and I realized today that when I see the place on foot, it gives me an opportunity to know the place unlike any other way of exploration. Looking at each house on the way, greeting each crossing traveler, seeing each tree, each flower, we were taking in the real scenes of Nepal. The country is beautiful and serene.

Our trek today was 13.4 km which we completed in 9 hours 56 minutes including lunch. We climbed a total ascent of 1523m & a total descent of 746m. Our net altitude gain today was 777m. Although an average speed of 1.3 kmph is nothing to boast about, but I feel really proud of completing today's trek. All experts told me yesterday that if you can complete Phakding to Namche trek without major difficulties, you can complete the full trek to Everest Base Camp.

Proud of the day today and looking forward to the rest day tomorrow for acclimatization.
