Mt. Everest

17th May 2013 Kala Pathar and EBC

Kala Pathar is a peak situated behind Gorakshep Village. The height of the peak 5545 meters. From this point you get a panaromic view of about 19 peaks. Only getting to the top is a tall order. You need to climb about 400 meters over a period of 3 hours. Today we had to visit Everest Base camp. Still some of us had the ambitious plans of visiting Kala Patthar before starting out for EBC. We started at about 3.50 am geared with bottle of hot water each and enough warm cloths as the temperatures were below zero even at Gorakshep. At about 5 am we saw the first glimpse of sunrays on Mount Everest. This was another proof that it is the highest peak, with only this peak getting the first rays in the entire range. A few minutes later the shadow of Mount Everest was visible on a few clouds around. The next 15 minutes gave excellent glimpses of the entire Himalayan range. However suddenly the entire valley was covered with fog and we were not able to see anything further. We continued our climb for half an hour more  but there was no change in the conditions. All of us returned after this barring Prashant and Nimish who made it to the top despite the conditions. Unfortunately they were not able to get any further glimpse of the mountain.

We were back in the hotel by 7.00 am, had a quick breakfast and were on our way to Everest Base Camp at 8.00. News was that the Giripremi team had reached Hillary step in its attempt to conquer Mount Everest. We were all excited to get the actual summit news at 8.30. 3 of the team members Bhushan Harshe, Ganesh More and Anand Mali had successfully reached the summit Mount Everest. There was a brief celebration on the way. We distributed Chocolates and were once again on our way to EBC. The entire trail was thru the Khumbu Glaciers and some of the views of Khumbu Ice Fall and the glacier were breathtaking. We reached the EBC flag at 10.45 am. There was a welcome party here for us ready with Tea and Juice. After a short rest we further proceeded to the actual site of Giripremi tents which was another hours walk.

Lunch here was a pleasant surprise and it included choicest chapattis, vegetables and watermelon. We were delighted to have this lunch especially after the same routine of dal bhat and potato dishes since we began the trek. Weather was getting a bit cloudy and we had to start back at 1.45 pm. We were back in the hotel by 5.15 pm. After this the team will split on their way back to Lukla. Some have already chosen to stay back at EBC for an overnight experience, some will be walking back to Lukla and some have a helicopter ride from Gorakhshep to Lukla. With this blog myself Amit will be signing off and the blog for the next few days will be taken over by someone else.
