9th May - FLy to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

5 am in the morning and the entire group was ready with their bags packed at the reception of the hotel. We were all ready to start for Lukla. Our flight was scheduled at 7.40 am but the weather conditions in the mountain are always uncertain and flights are subject to cancellation in case of rough weather. We were all worried that not a single flight could take off yesterday and today was cloudy too. We were hoping that we don’t get stuck at the airport. Luckily at the airport we were informed that the weather at Lukla was ok and the flights would fly. We were surprised to see that the boarding passes did not contain the name of the passenger or the seat numbers. Our flight was a 16 seater “Twin Otter”. The weather was still cloudy about 20-25 minutes into the flight with very less visibility. The last 10 minutes however the weather cleared and we could see a very good view of the Lukla Airport and the village.

After having tea at Lukla we all commenced our trek at 10 am. It was a continuous decent for most of the trail and we reached village Thadakosi at 11.45. The view from this place was fantastic and river Doodh Koshi about 200 meters below us was giving glimpses of fresh green and white colors. We had lunch here at “Hotel View Point” and started at 1.00 pm for the last phase of today’s trek. The weather was cloudy now and though the trail though uphill was a pleasure. At 1.20 we crossed village “Ghat” and at about 1.40 it started to drizzle. We were all ready with Ponchos in our backpack and rains could not dampen our spirits. The last 20 minutes thru the drizzle saw we reach Phakding at 2.00 and we are to stay here over night at “Tashi Tagey Lodge”

At 3.30 we reassembled at the dining for tea and then had a brief stroll across the village for about an hour. All the 15 team members are fully fit and full of enthusiasm right from 11 year old Yash to 70 year young Anand. Tomorrow is expected to be a very grueling climb and we plan to climb to Namache Bazar an ascent of about 3000 feet above Phakding.
