21 April, 2013 - Kathmandu City Tour

Today we took a city tour of Kathmandu visiting 3 World Heritage sites, 2 Hindu and one Buddhist. First we visited a site for the cremation of Hindus.  We were able to witness several cremations in differing stages of the process and learned how each family member participates.  Next we visited a Buddhist Stupa in the middle of the city and learned about the colors of the prayer flags.  The white color means air, yellow is earth, blue is water, red is fire and green is cosmos.  We had a fabulous lunch overlooking the Stupa.  Next we went on a harrowing drive to a Buddhist temple overlooking the city which had many wild monkeys running around as we climbed the hill to the temple. We were told to stay away from the monkeys since they could be aggressive.  At the temple we were able to go inside a monastery and learn how one is able to become a monk.  It takes several years of studying to become a monk.  After the tour we spent some time in the Thamel area visiting many shops.  You cannot imagine the number of people, cars and motorcycles zooming by and around you.  Tonight we are going to dinner, packing then to bed as we have an early departure tomorrow to Besishahar to begin the trek.
