wakeup call was softened by being presented with a warm cup of tea and coffee by our excellent Sherpa team. Blue skies and warm weather made for an excellent days hiking in the beautiful Khumbu valley. We slowly but steadily made our way through the valley alongside a high altitude river. It's important to ensure we take our time when hiking to avoid altitude sickness. Every so often we had to flatten ourselves along the cliff walls to allow teams of yaks and horses carrying supplies further up the mountains to pass us. We did get a warming before they arrived as they all wear bells and impressive headdresses. After 3 hours we stopped for lunch in Jorsale before starting out on the 600m climb to Namche. Dawa Sherpa led the group up the trail to Namche, which is a beautiful village set in a natural amphitheater, surrounded by high altitude peaks and waterfalls.
The Khumbu lodge where we are staying for the next 3 nights can only be described as luxurious, especially after a hard day's hiking. We have en-suites, hot water and electric blankets, it doesn’t get any better!! Liz gave an excellent lecture on Acute Mountain Sickness, and after a hearty dinner the group is looking forward to a good night's sleep, ready for more adventure tomorrow.
